"Love is like swallowing hot chocolate before it has cooled off, it takes you by surprise at first but keeps you warm for a long time" - Henri Frederic Amiel (Swiss Moral Philosopher)
As the weather cools, Hot chocolate makes a great alternative to chai or coffee, Here are 5 simple tips that will help you make some epic hot chocolate at home.
1.The Liquid - The liquid makes up majority of the drink, You can choose water, this would make the drink a lot thinner and less luxurious, however if you are using single origin chocolate, water is perfect as the flavour characteristics of the chocolate will totally come through.
Milk will make the drink a lot thicker and luscious, full cream is always recommended, Almond milk adds an interesting flavour profile to the hot chocolate however its quite pricey!
2.The Chocolate - No cocoa powder please!!!, Hot chocolate as the name suggests should have chocolate, there are many varieties of chocolate available in the market today, if you want your drink to be luxurious, pick a chocolate that says that.
3.More is More - Be generous with the amount of chocolate, which means make sure at least 30% (if not more) of your drink is made up of chocolate, a cocoa content between 60% to 70% makes the beverage just right, not too sweet neither too bitter.
4.Don't Burn It - There is no need to boil the milk or the finished hot chocolate, simmer the milk, add the chocolate and stir until the chocolate completely dissolves , Use a Whisk to break lumps.
5.Aerate and serve ASAP - Simply shake the beverage or pour it back and forth (You could also invest in a steam wand) before taking a sip, this gives it a good froth while enhancing the taste too.
